Alternative Division Rules & Definitions

Twin

  1. Two fiddle players per Division entry – any age
  2. Contestants may play two tunes of their choice
  3. Judges are sequestered
  4. Congruent performances will be most desirable. Twin style should be two fiddlers’ playing in each others shadow, melody and harmony move together. Orchestrated performances do not fit the definition of "twin" fiddling.
  5. Qualities

  6. Technical difficulty
  7. Intonation with regard to relative pitch.
  8. Blending of tone and feel
  9. Interesting intervals

 

 

Jack Pot - Jed Bulla Memorial

Contestants score extra points for telling a happy story about Jed Bulla

  1. Judges are not sequestered. Judges will be placed on display for all to see.
  2. Judges choose the tunes to be placed in "the hat"
  3. Judges decide how much of the tune must be played.
  4. (A&B parts, at least an A part etc…) Criteria becomes stricter as rounds progress.

  5. Majority Rules: Decisions are made immediately after each contestant has performed – score is defined as a "yes" or "no"(thumbs up or thumbs down). Judges may display cards to the contestants and the audience indicating their vote. Majority vote will determine whether the contestant will move on to the next round.
  6. Crowd may display their opinion as to whether they agree or not. (cheers or boo’s)
  7. Time allotted to prepare: First day approximately 2 hours. Time allotted 2nd day…. Anywhere from 1 hour to 1 minute.
  8. Last bout will be sudden death…Contestants will not leave the stage area while drawing final tunes…contestant order and tunes drawing will be done immediately following each bout. Judges will define criteria for each bout as the division progresses. A spokesperson on the judging panel will take the Mic to explain each bout's criteria to the contestants and the audience.
  9. Last person standing takes all entry fees collected for this division! (additional prize money may be augmented as the contest committee sees fit)

Novice Divisions - Jeff Hertz Memorial

1. Contestant may play two tunes of any kind

2. No Time Limit

3. Contesants winning first place must move on to thier age division the next year.

4. All other general rules apply except those noted in these alternative rules.
